This masterclass provided an opportunity to reflect on the deteriorating health equalities picture in the North West and across similarly deprived areas as a result of longstanding socioeconomic inequities and ethnic disadvantage exacerbated by a decade of spending cuts and amplified by COVID and the result of long lockdowns.

The Coronavirus death rate in Greater Manchester was 25% higher than the England average during the year to March 2021 leading to ‘jaw -dropping’ falls in life expectancy and widening social and health inequalities.

We heard from speakers who are at the cutting edge of exploring these issues and making a difference. They shared what they believe ‘levelling up’ looks like by focusing upon equity of health and wellbeing in the communities that have been hardest hit by the pandemic and investing in the nation’s physical and mental health.

This event is for those who want to learn more about the health equalities picture across the UK with a particular focus on the North West and understand better what you can do in your leadership role to progress the build back fairer challenge.
